Tesla will bring radar back to cars
Tesla intends to equip its cars with high-quality radar.
Tesla has asked the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for permission to install radar in its electric cars. According to experts, in this way the company intends to improve the operation of the automatic piloting function.
Previously, Tesla began to phase out radar and sensors in cars. Thus, the company can return the equipment to its electric cars. Corporation engineers adhere to the Tesla Vision concept, whose supporters believe that an autopilot relying on images from cameras and a neural network will work better. In this regard, the manufacturer stopped equipping its cars with radars from 2021, and from the beginning of 2022 – with ultrasonic sensors.
The Tesla concept failed, and the corporation is looking for a way to improve the autopilot in their cars in a different way. In the summer of 2021, Tesla CEO Elon Musk allowed radar to appear in electric cars, but only if the company found very high-resolution equipment. “Very high-resolution radar would be better than normal vision, but no such radar exists,” Musk said.
