Pope Francis passed away
Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 on Monday, April 21, 2025, in his residence at the Domus Sanctae Marthae in the Vatican. His death at 7:35 a.m. local time was announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Roman Catholic Church.
Francis, the first Pope from Latin America, had led the Catholic Church since 2013. His papacy was marked by a commitment to reform, openness to dialogue, and support for marginalized communities. He was a vocal advocate for social justice, environmental protection, and assistance to refugees.
A few weeks before his death, the Pope suffered a severe respiratory infection that developed into bilateral pneumonia. After five weeks of hospital treatment, he was discharged on March 23 but remained weak. His last public appearance was during the Easter Mass at St. Peter’s Square, where he gave the Urbi et Orbi blessing.
World leaders have expressed their condolences. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky called Francis “a man of peace,” while French President Emmanuel Macron praised his “devotion to the most vulnerable.”
In response to the Pope’s passing, the Italian Serie A football league postponed its scheduled matches for April 21, including games of the Primavera 1 youth championship.
Following Francis’s death, the period of sede vacante has begun — a time when the Holy See remains without a pope. The conclave to elect a new pontiff is expected to begin no earlier than May 6, 2025.
Pope Francis leaves behind a legacy of compassion, humility, and a deep commitment to peace — one that will continue to inspire millions around the world.
